TATRY Polish Folklore Ensemble
Complete Group History
1973-1975.
Group founded with 8 original members in December 1972, reaching membership of 54 in 1975. TATRY’s Founder and first President is Mr. Albin Morzajew, its first choreographer is Mr. Jerzy Rozycki.
1976-1977.
Mrs. Halina Pagacz is elected the new President of the Group. TATRY appears on "L’Ecole du Music Hall" television show; Senior Group participates in "Polonia Jutra" festival in Toronto.
1978.
5th Anniversary of TATRY celebrated with commemorative Ball
1980.
A major setback: 17 members remain after the Senior Group disbands and choreographer resigns. Mr. Jerzy Jedrzejowski succeeds Mrs. Pagacz as President.
1982.
Mr. Andrzej Koczorowski, formerly of the Polish State Folk Ballet "Slask" joins TATRY as Choreographer and Artistic Director.
1984-1985.
TATRY comes "of age" with the debut of Goralski. Membership more than double that of 1980. Key performances: Polish Congress Ball, various multicultural festivals in and around Montreal.
1985.
TATRY presents a special 2-hour concert to help raise money for the Parish Hall renovations at St. Michael’s and St. Anthony’s Parish of Montreal. All money raised is donated to the renovation fund. New dances for 1985 included Krakowiak by the Senior Group and Kujawiak/Oberek by the Junior Group.
1986.
TATRY performs at the Drummondville Folklore Festival. Dances performed included Krakowiak, Goralski, Kolomajki, and Gaiczek (Slask region).
1986-1987.
Boguslaw Wilecki takes over as the Ensemble’s President. Participation in numerous festivals in Brossard, Cornwall (Ontario), Drummondville. Mazur, Polka Warszawska, Baba-Dziad (Wilamowice region) added to the Group’s repertoire.
1988-1989.
1988-Performance at the Polish Congress Ball, where the guest of honour is Prime Minister of Canada, Brian Mulroney. 1989-TATRY performs at the Polish Congress Ball in the presence of Mr. Jacques Parizeau, then-premier of Quebec.
1990-1992.
Kujawiak/Oberek newest choreography; Performance of Note: TATRY’s joint performance with Hungarian Group MAGOR at the Drummondville International Folklore Festival.
1993.
TATRY debuts at the International Festival of Polish Folklore in Rzeszow, Poland. Repertoire of 8 dances prepared, including 2 Quebecois dances.
1994.
TATRY tapes television special for Tele-Polonica (Montreal Polish television station); TATRY presents a fund-raising concert at the Parish Hall to a sold-out audience. The concert is a resounding success.
1995.
Mr. Edward Sliz takes on role of President. Mr. Jerzy Rozycki returns as choreographer.
1996.
TATRY participates in the Polish Folklore Festival in Rzeszow, Poland for the second time. New dances Kolomajki and Podegrodzie (Nowy Sacz region) are performed.
1997.
Mr. Andrzej Koczorowski returns as choreographer after a one-year absence. Membership exceeds 60 members.
1998.
TATRY celebrates its 25th Anniversary with commemorative Ball at Town of Mount Royal Hall in November 1998, during which a medley of all past and present dances is presented. The Ball is attended by many dancers from 1973- 1998.
1999.
Membership exceeds 50 members. TATRY continues to be highly visible in the Polish Community of Montreal with performances at the Polish Congress Ball and Akademia Trzeciego Maja
1999-2000.
TATRY’s newest choreography, "Tance Wielkopolskie" is completed. This season also sees the purchase of new costumes for Goralski, Nowy Sacz and Wielkopolski regions. TATRY joins the PFDAA (Polish Folk Dance Association of the Americas) and attends PolishFest 2000 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin
2000-2001.
TATRY continues to be highly visible in the Polish community of Montreal, with several key performances in Fall 2000. TATRY performs at its spring concert with Toronto-based Polish group "Swarni Z Kanady".
2001-2002.
TATRY membership exceeds 60 members. Newest dances for Youngest group -"Krakowiak", for Junior group -"Chodzony/Oberek".
Summer 2002: Senior group participates in Polish Folklore Festival in Rzeszow, Poland for the third time.
2002-2003
With the departure of Mr. Andrzej Koczorowski, Ms. Krystyna Jedrzejowska is named Choreographer of all groups. New dances for this season: Group 1-Tance Slaskie, Group 2-Tance Zywieckie, Group 3-Tance Górali Zywieckich, as well as Polonaise and Mazurka.
2003-2004
The Ensemble celebrates its 30th Anniversary with a commemorative Ball in November 2003 and a special performance by all groups.
2004-2005
New season opened with mass in costume. Three new additions to repertoire planned for this year's program: Lublin dances - group 1, Dances from Wilamowice - group 2, Rzeszow Suite - group 3.
